MakerBot Quick Tips #6 - Printed Support
The MakerBot and other Fused Deposition Modeling 3D printers have one thing in common: They lay down layers of molten plastic filament which rest upon either a platform or the previously printed layer. The MakerBot Replicator, for example, can print an over hanging feature up to an angle of approximately 45 degrees from vertical. Much more than that, and the extruded plastic would have nothing on which to build, and it would fall down and ruin the print.
There is a solution, and it is the topic of this video: Printed support. The printer can create a temporary support structure, on to which are printed the over hanging layers. The support is removed when the print is complete.
In this video I print the letter "T" to demonstrate how printed support makes it possible to print the over hanging top cross of the "T."
