The prices of Windows devices continue to plunge! HP has just released this new 7 inch tablet that runs the full version of Windows 8.1.
Build quality for the price is surprisingly good. HP managed to get a 7 inch IPS display built into the tablet and it feels solid overall.
Performance is actually pretty good considering the price. It has a quad core Intel Atom processor that delivers about the same performance as other Atom based PCs. It is limited by only having one gigabyte of memory, so there will be a limit to how much multitasking the machine can handle without slowing down.
When running one application at time the machine feels as good as some of the inexpensive Atom based laptops I've looked at recently. Gaming performance is lacking for modern games (mostly due to the small amount of available RAM) but older games and casual mobile games should work fine.
The Stream 7 lacks an external video port, so it's not easy to use the tablet on a larger display. It is possible to transmit the display wirelessly to a Miracast device, but the output has a lot of latency and it won't go beyond its native 1280x800 resolution. The charging port is OTG compatible, so it might be possible to use a USB video device with it.
Yes it has limitations - both in its available memory and external display capabilities. But Compare this to any other $99 out there and it's exceptionally good - especially given how well it runs the full version of Windows 8.1
