Distance based shutter triggering is very helpful if you're generating orthomosaic maps from your Canon camera. Previously I had been using the CHDK intervalometer to take photos every 2 seconds. While this worked I generally found in some cases there was too much overlap while in others there wasn't enough, such as flying downwind at a faster speed. Distance based trigger will provide more consistent results.
Also, be sure to check out the tip in the video where I talk about using the Mission Planner survey tool to estimate the distance trigger (CAM_TRIGG_DIST) parameter. It's a very useful tool to come up with a good value for your flight based on camera type, altitude, speed, and overlap.
