One of DC’s most popular characters is set to get a spinoff movie and we’ve got the details! It looks like Harley Quinn is ready to step out of The Joker’s shadow and grab the spotlight for herself. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Warner Brothers is currently developing a spinoff movie for Suicide Squad member “Harley Quinn”. The fan favorite character is set to make her debut this August in the highly anticipated villain team-up movie and has already become the standout character of the film. Margot Robbie, who will play “Harley” in Suicide Squad will star and produce the untitled film that will reportedly include other DC heroes and villains with names like “Batgirl” and “Birds of Prey” being referenced. Jena Malone, who was cut from the theatrical release of Batman v Superman, has been rumored to be playing “Batgirl”, aka “Barbara Gordon”, but no word if she will appear as that character in future films. As for “Birds of Prey”, in the comics it is a group of female heroes and villains that began with “Oracle”, Batgirl’s new alter ego after being paralyzed by The Joker and “Black Canary”, a character often associated with Green Arrow. The team has consisted of various heroes and Suicide Squad members throughout the years. According to sources, Robbie came up with the idea for the film while researching the role and not only fell in love with the stories of “Quinn”, but many of DC’s other female characters. A writer is already working on the project, but no details are known right now other than that it’s a female writer. With DC trailing far behind rival Marvel, developing a female driven comic book movie around Robbie’s “Harley Quinn” seems like a smart move for the studio to help them standout. The character has become one of DC’s most popular, even outpacing Wonder Woman in sales and the studio has also had success with their recent DC SuperHero Girls line of comics and products that focuses on Harley Quinn as well as other DC characters like Batgirl, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn’s fellow Suicide Squad member, “Katana”. The studio is already getting a jump on Marvel by releasing their first female led superhero movie next year with Wonder Woman set to arrive in theaters on June 2nd, 2017.
