Is Web Design Still a Good Career?
Should you still become a Web Designer today even if Web Design is being undervalued? I think Web Design is still very important but you can't approach getting a job as a web designer or getting web design clients the same way you used to only a few years ago.
Web Design has changed a lot, and so has the way we hire Web Designers and what we actually need from them.
Web Design is about tech, it's not about code, its about what the clients and employer need from you. Both Web Designers and Graphic Designers have romantic notions today for whatever reason. They think that its about them being "tech savvy" or being an "artist" rather than about the sales and marketing goals they are helping to achieve.
This is a mistake and why many when thinking about How to Become a Web Designer or how to Become a Graphic Designer, don't really know where to begin, or how to find clients or how to get hired.
Empathy and understanding what you help other achieve is the key here. Not what you "want" to be doing. What you want to do is important on some level, but it is secondary if you're interested in making a living as a Web Designer or Graphic Designer.
You are executing on bringing someone's vision to life. Making "cool" stuff will ultimately come down to working for yourself, which is still an option, but will require very unique skills you may or may not have.
