Paul stopped by the patch on his way to catch a flight at the airport. He’s got an E-flite Rare Bear on order and volunteered to do the maiden flight for me so I could (attempt to) video it for the maiden. He said he was eager to give it a try because he’d much rather crash mine than his.
I didn’t have the recommended battery, a 4s 3300mAh 50c but had some 4s 3850 65c lipos that were looking for work. The Thunder Power 3850 is not much heavier than E-Flite's 3300 so there wasn’t much of a weight penalty. I found that to hit the recommended CG, the battery had to be placed as far forward as it could go. The same was true for a Turnigy 4s 3300 20c I tried later.
Paul flies turbine jets and other assorted fast movers so he usually flies “big”. Not a good recipe for trying to get up close and personal with the camera. As fast as this little Rare Bear is, you pretty much have to fly big anyway. This will likely be the slowest plane Paul will fly all year but it's plenty quick for me.
It flew great and is going to be a keeper. As can be expected, it flew quite a bit faster with the 65c lipo than compared to the 20c. It was interesting to note however, that the 20c came down barely warm so they are safe to use for putzing around. I think I’m going to give her a bit more aileron throw for a faster roll rate but aside from that, she doesn’t need anything to be a lot of fun.

A big thank you to Harv for the launch, to Paul for flying and to Cam at Go Go Hobbies for getting me mine before Paul got his.
Hopefully, I will be able to do another, better video to give you a closer look at the plane in flight. I think if we slow her down to about 50 or 60mph, I will be able to keep up with it with the camera and get a little closer with the zoom. With any luck, maybe I can talk Harv into flying mine in formation with Paul’s when he gets his. Nothing like a 100mph drag race down the runway :-)
As always, thanks for watching and I hope to see you drop by again soon. Happy flying!
