Hey guys, this is Jack and welcome to my first video in the Precision Practice series. Now in this video, I'll be going over the basics of the Split-S manoeuver which you can use in both freestyle and racing.
In freestyle, this manoeuver is pretty awesome because you can fly over a nice obstacle upside down with the throttle mostly disengaged and then come back either under or through it. In races, this is also really good if you need to change direction and come back from where you came from.
Now the perfect place to practice this is the first gates in the Liftoff Simulator. You can basically just follow the same routine that I'm doing here, just remember that you need to go through the 3 green gates as well for this to actually give you some good practice.
Now to do the Split S is really simple. The most difficult part of this manoeuver is to know when to initiate the first roll. If you initiate the roll too early, you'll end up crashing into the obstacle and not make it over, whereas if you initiate it too late, you overshoot it and it'll look a bit sloppy. However, you would rather want to overshoot the obstacle or gate so that you can still recover from it.
Now once you've initiated the roll you would want to cut down on the power quite a lot, since if you keep the power the same, you'll end up crashing into the ground. If you're flying freestyle and you want fly up towards an obstacle, it's also really nice to cut power almost completely and initiate an early Split S to then glide over the obstacle with your momentum keeping the camera pointed towards the obstacle. As soon as you start losing upwards momentum, you want to try and catch the drone again by applying some throttle. This is really important to get the timing and pitch just right, because if you start catching the drone too early, it might push you into the obstacle. Timing is everything.
Now another thing to remember is that when you are catching the drone, your pitch is also really important. What I've noticed is that your pitch is almost always in the sweet spot when your camera is pointed towards either the gate or the obstacle. If you can keep your camera pointed towards this then you only have to gauge the throttle to catch it again. This especially works well when you're racing.
And that's about it for the split-s. Once you've mastered this manoeuver, you'll really see that your stick control and precision gets a lot better. Rather take it slow at first and build up the consistency without crashing and then slowly start pushing yourself to go faster.
Now in my next video I'll be going over some more Precision Practice routines to help you become a better FPV Pilot. If you liked this video and don't want to miss the next, then make sure to hit the Subscribe button.
