Look up “hairdresser’s car” in the Urban Dictionary and there’s one particular model that ranks highly: the Audi TT. The two-door German sports coupe that has been known for putting its styling ahead of its sportiness – and that’s pretty much the definition of a hairdresser’s car: more show than go.
But now there’s an all-new Audi TT: and there’s a lot more to it than just a new look.
The 2015 (2016 MY) Audi TT has, according to the brand, three core aims: to be more sporty, more high-tech and more stylish than the two generations of TT models that came before it.
It’s built on a new platform and features a grunty new 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 169kW and 370Nm. There’s a six-speed manual available in the entry-level models, but the majority sold will feature the six-speed S tronic dual-clutch auto.
Everything inside the cabin is focused on the driver. The innovative ventilation controls are inset in to these turbine-inspired vents, and you’ll note there’s no pop-up centre screen like you see in almost every other Audi.
That’s because the music, navigation and car controls all feature in the 12.3inch TFT Virtual Cockpit display in front of the driver.
It is mind-bending to see such quality graphics in front of the driver’s eyes, yet it remains easy to use because of Audi’s simplified MMI dial control system, with supplementary steering wheel controls also offering simple adjustment on the move. You can even use voice control with simple commands like “I feel like pizza”….
If you want to take your friends to the pizza joint, make sure they’re short in stature – the two rear seats are tiny, suitable only for smaller people, or perhaps best left empty.
The boot offers a decent amount of space – 305 litres. If you need to cart bigger items, the rear seats fold down, too.
That’s the functional side of things covered. To find out how fun it is, you’ll have to watch the video!
