Just a few years after Christianity had started gaining ground in Europe, a single man, named St.Honorat, returned from his journeys in the Orient. He founded one of the first monasteries in Europe on a beautiful desert island right in front of Cannes (France). Here St.Honorat introduced the sober monastic life as lived by the fathers in Egypt and Palestine, and there are still traces of this in the present community life of the monks of Lérins.
