In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew has a conversation with Robin Lineberger, the Global & Aerospace and Defense Leader with powerhouse accounting, tax and consulting firm Deloitte. The wide ranging discussion looks at the future of drone operations in the United States and around the world, from small commercial platforms, to unmanned air taxis and autonomous deliver and cargo drones. Deloitte has begun to re-define the familiar acronym UTM, changing “Unmanned Traffic Management” to “Unified Traffic Management.” This reflects the fact that for drones to be fully integrated into the US National Airspace System (NAS), drones will need to operate successfully alongside crewed aircraft. This change will require three fundamental breakthroughs: recognition and definition of the airspace to be used by drones, sense-and-avoid capabilities coupled with remote identification technology and a management system based around artificial intelligence to govern this complex network, potentially incorporating 5G wireless connectivity.
