Hey Everyone -
Today I am bringing you the unboxing and subsequent review of the Skye Intelligence Orbit+ .
I recently interviewed Skye Intelligence at Interdrone and was really pretty excited about their Orbit+ drone. Although it isn't directly a drone that fills my needs I thought it could be really cool for mountain biking and other activities where I would love to be hands off and have a drone follow me.
Quick disclaimer, Skye Intelligence gave me this drone but they are not paying me or compensating me in any way, and you will see in the video that regardless of how I get an item to review you are going to get my raw, unfiltered thoughts on it.
I was really excited to try this drone out, from an innovative design to some promising (on paper) follow technology it sounded great. I was less impressed on specs with the camera being 1080P 30p/60p and being a single axis gimbal. Other than that everything looked good.
Looked good, until I got it up in the air. Right off the bat there were issues. The app is bug ridden, settings will not allow input, the app doesn't redraw correctly etc. The drone's camera cannot look straight in front of it and instead is limited to rising to a claimed 15 degrees below the horizon, my experience was more in the 30-40 range which meant it had to be really high and get more of a birds eye view of you.
Beyond this, it just, doesn't work. It constantly disconnects, the GPS tracker is in my opinion a puck with a couple LED's it really does nothing. It would stop recording on it's own, and it never followed my for more than about 1/4 mile (much less really, that's being generous). On the app when I would go to track and draw a bounding box around me it would create a target box on the other side of the screen no where near where I drew the target. This happened over and over and over.
I was really, really, really disappointed. There is a lot of work to do and at a suggested retail price of $799 I don't really know how they expect to sell any outside of what was already sold via their kickstarter. For a selfie based drone you have the Dobby and Breeze for under $500, and the Breeze is 4k, this isn't.
Overall this was / is a giant NAY from me. I can't recommend it, I hope they do some serious work on the issues, come back with a better price point and something that works. Like I said, the design is cool, the tech, well it just isn't.
