The compact crossover segment includes so many vehicles that most drivers can find one built to meet their needs. Mazda’s 2017 CX-5 doesn’t want to take over the category, but hopes to please shoppers seeking a small crossover with a little more luxury and sportiness than the segment-leading RAV4, CR-V, and Rogue. Its new G-Vectoring Control modulates torque to counteract the loads exerted on a car through a turn and improve steering feel, and its automatic transmission’s shift mapping makes the CX-5 more fun to drive than those category leaders.
But the CX-5’s 2017 changes may not work for those who need to carry people or cargo. The front seats are comfortable, but the backseat will be cramped for many adults, and the CX-5’s cargo room falls significantly short of last year’s version as well as most competitors. Happily, the CX-5 does offer automatic emergency braking, and the MazdaConnect infotainment system works well, despite not supporting Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Read more on CarGurus:
